The Ultimate Guide to Self-Tanning At Home

Basking for hours under the summer sun may feel really rejuvenating, but it is not at all good for your precious skin. In fact, prolonged exposure to the sun can increase your risk of developing skin cancer, and also accelerate wear signs of aging, such as sagging and wrinkles. If you love being tan, but don’t want to damage your skin with harmful UV rays, you can turn to sunless tanning products instead. One of the best parts about these products is that they pose absolutely no risk of cancer!

Continue reading for tips on how to use your sunless bronzing mousse at home:

Step 1: Exfoliate

First and foremost, exfoliating your skin is crucial before applying a self-tanning product. In order to remove the build up of dead skin cells, dirt, debris, makeup, and other grime, you can use an exfoliant to smooth out your skin. This will help the mousse glide over the skin for an even texture. You want to make sure there is nothing there to act as a barrier between your skin and the ingredients. This will prevent clumping and blotchiness from occurring.

P.S. — You can also use a 100% natural exfoliating cloth the day before application to help with those problem areas. It provides a deep exfoliation for those rough spots like elbows, knees, wrists, and more!

Step 2: Apply With A Mitt

For the best results, you should use a special mitt to apply our sunless-bronzing mousse. This accessory is the ultimate tanning essential for a streak-free finish and stain-free hands. Our Applicator Mitt at The Madeline Brand will evenly distribute the tanning formula onto the skin, whilst the water-resistant barrier ensures a flawless application. For those problem areas, feel free to apply a water-based, oil-free lotion before application. Think about your ankles, knees, elbows, hands, and feet.

Soft and luxurious to the touch, our premium velvet Mitt is double sided for use on either hand to make the process that much simpler! Washable and reusable, we recommend washing our Mitt with warm soapy water after each use for proper care.

When you apply our mousse, make sure to perform long circulation motions to your face and body. Use any excess amounts to lightly blend over the hands and feet. Then, you are ready for the next step.

Step 3: Wait 8 Hours to Shower

Once you have correctly applied our sunless-bronzing mousse, we suggest waiting about 8 hours to rinse off in the shower. If you shower before the tan has ample time to develop, it can wash away the bronzer and prevent it from fully absorbing into the skin.

Keep in mind that your shower should be lukewarm, and only last a few minutes at most. The longer you stay under the streaming water, the more your tan will fade. You should also pat yourself dry with a towel, instead of rubbing your skin. The friction can remove your beautiful glow!

Step 4: Moisturize Your Skin

It’s important to moisturize your skin on a regular basis to maintain the tan. This will also help restore any lost moisture that occurred during the exfoliation and application process. When you apply a sunless-bronzing mousse, you want to keep dry skin at bay. It can lead to dark patches that look very unnatural! Make sure whatever moisturizer you use is oil-free, because oils left on the skin will lead to uneven streaks.

Here at The Madeline Brand, we offer a Tan Extend Lotion designed to maintain and restore a sun-kissed glow because it includes a small percentage of DHA, which is responsible for the color of your tan. This product hydrates your skin, helping keep your tan look even and smooth for an extended period.

Essential any time of year, this extender is key to replenishing the skin with nutrients, vitamins, and moisture. And, keep in mind that healthy and moisturized skin will hold a tan longer due to less shedding of dead skin cells.
